I've been detecting for over thirty years.  I have been a past President and newsletter editor of a local club.  I don't have the time to get out and hunt like I used to, but I go every chance that I get.  With about eight inches of snow last night, and it still falling, it will be several days before I can go again

Hi Silversmith45,
Welcome aboard - I'm from Kansas, too. You must be living down south as we only have a dusting of snow up here in the NE section. With 30 years of detecting, you probably have made some impressive finds. What's your best so far? Sue

I'm from Wichita.  My oldest coin so far (readable) is an 1871 Indian head.  That's about when Wichita got started.  I found a Shield nickel, but I can't read a date.  It could be older or newer.  I have an 1877 Seated Dime and numerous Barber dimes and a Barber half.  I have yet to find a Barber quarter.  My favorite finds, made twenty years apart, are from the 100+ year old Carey Hotel (now the Eaton) in Wichita.  One is a room key tag and I believe the other is a laundry tag.   I don't know anyone else that has ever found one.

Hi Koda57 and welcome! We're right on the N edge of the storm system - we needed a break after that Christmas blizzard. Hope you just get snow not ice. Meteorites was why I bought a detector. I thought I'd found one and wanted to find more. Detecting for them was too boring for me - walk all afternoon in native prairie and not even hear a beep. No regrets that I bought the detector though as I've had a lot of fun with it. Sue

For starting, there are several good detectors made my Fisher, Whites, Garrett. and Tesoro.  They range from around $175 to $250.  The Garrett Ace 250 seems to be the all time favorite.  If you don't want to spend that much to start, Bounty hunter makes some less expensive models.  The secret to making finds, is to get out and look.  The more you use your detector, the better you will understand it.  Any place where people have been in the past is a good place to start looking.  Happy Hunting.  Silversmith45.

Hi Silver, Wichita seems like it would be a good home base for detecting. I've been there a few times, but not detecting. I'm in Lawrence. The oldest coin I've found is a 1846 dime. It was my first silver find. City was making sidewalks wheel chair accessible where they met up with alleys and streets. That dime had been under the sidewalk a long time. I'll probably never find one older than it, but that's ok. Following the city around is one of my favorite activities - I can spot that orange fencing blocks away.  Smiley Sue
