Hey Irish Welcome from Galveston Texas

What kind of hunting are you looking to do. You got parks, school yards, campsite around a lake maybe. Are if your looking to hunt artifacts do a little research at the library and look at old maps for old home sites and camp grounds

What kind od NMD do you want to do? I bet there are a bunch of good places to hunt in Tehachipi. I am in Fresno and if you are in the area, get a hold of me and we can go to one of the many parks I have been hitting....and finding stuff too.

Thanks for the advice, I'll go to the library today.  I'm mostly looking for artifacts.

WELCOME. You've got a great location for anything you want. I used to live out your way. Fossils on Sharktooth Mtn. Gold to the east artifacts and railroad stuff in your own backyard. Ghost towns all over, but I used to search Horse Canyon. About 8 miles east of you off Hwy 58. Take Sand Canyon north about 3 miles. The small canyon to the north east is Horse Canyon. Lots of caves, Petroglyph's and Rattle Snakes. Check a Topo Map and ask at the Tehachapi Fire Station for directions and they will show you their map on the wall and point it out. They will also lead you to the unofficial caretaker. It is public land but there was a fire built in one of the caves years ago that destroyed some of the petroglyph's. They will watch you going in and out. I've never been asked to leave the detector in the truck.
As legend has it, a wagon was ambushed near Red Rock Canyon and hauled over the ridge into Horse canyon. It was filled with a family's belongings and life savings. The wagon was up turned, spilling the contents and burned.
Good luck, have fun, and be careful. The snakes are bad in the Spring.

How do you train the snakes to be good in the spring? Might be worth the effort.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
