Hello my name is Andrew and I just moved to the beautiful state of Hawaii.  I have just recently gotten interested in metal detecting and am planning on getting a md very soon.  I am thinking about getting a Garrett ACE 350 and doing a little bit of sand and wading  MD'ing.  I really am looking forward to going down to Waikiki and MD'ing the beach there. Well if you live in Oahu hopefully I will see you out there, to all the others on the board happy hunting.  Detecting

Hello Andrew.....welcome from Arizona....make sure you don't let any water get in the control housing....that includes making sure you don't lift your coil up so that water can run from the coil head to the housing.   Make sure you take those precautions, and you should have a great time with your Ace 350  (just remember, it really isn't made to be used in the water...if you really want something to use wading (where you don't have to worry about a wave taking you by surprise) check out the more expensive Garrett AT Pro or one of the detectors designed to be used in the water....there more expensive, but... Or you could just make a waterproof housing for your Ace 350.   If you do a google search, you can find a couple of pretty good links to where another guy constructed an inexpensive waterproof housing for his Ace 250.

Welcome from New Mexico!

Don't know about the ACE and salt water.   The 25o is not so good.

I would do some more checking.

Welcome from Utah!
I'm also considering upgrading to a Garrett ACE 350! They look like they're pretty good bang for the buck.

The perfect choice!

I've hunted Waikiki both on land and in the water. Not much to find there. Go to Sunset Beach and see what you come up with. At Waikiki on the sand, I saw 20 or more people detecting. At Sunset Beach, nobody but us chickens, mate. My finds were much greater at the lesser used beach on the sand. In the water, my best finds were inside the breakwater behind that small wall on the left end as you face the beach from downtown. People use it as a kiddie swimming area. The water at Sunset Beach was just too turbulent and I found nothing in the water at all. Even if I did, I suspect it would have been very worn down by sand blasting in the rough surf.

The place I'd REALLY love to try is Hanama Bay but that's a National Seashore and off limits to detectors. Shame.

No, mate. I'm American but I live in Australia. When the wife and I travel to the US, Oahu is our first stop. We love to spend a couple of weeks there on the way to the mainland.
