I'm a product test engineer for Analog Devices Inc and have already built a simple BFO metal detector that the kids play with.  Not much for depth (a quarter @ ~ 6"/air) and of course no discrimination.  I have enjoyed looking at the boards/schematics of various VLF and PI metal detectors and plan on building something again this year.
