Let's face it, to the average American, "Fish and Chips" sounds so much more exotic and appealing than "Fried Fish and French Fries".   And wouldn't you much rather have "Salisbury steak" than "bunless hamburger patty"?

Have to agree. It was our favourite but now an Indian curry seems to have taken over. Not many fish and chip shops owned by white nationals most have been taken over by Asians or Chinese. Cod which was the favourite has been replaced with cheaper varieties and the flavour and quality has gone.

Sorry to hear that, last time i had Fish and Chips in England was about 14 years ago and it was great and tons of food.  I like curry also, may have to come check it out, since the curry in Oklahoma is very lackluster.

I hear spiny dog fish is used a lot now in England, due to the reductions in cod populations?  I suspect it is as you said, reduced cost with cheaper fish.  There is a shop by me that serves halibut and chips, it is VERY good.  What they advertise as cod here, can be any number of fish, none of which are cod.

I fish a lot and have used a Yorkshire beer batter recipe.  It is really good.  I have used this with lingcod, halibut and rockcod with good success.  I like the dredge my chips in seasoned flour or the beer batter as well before double frying.  I prefer to cut my chips round and very thick.  I double fry them by frying them once, letting them sit, and then return to the oil to finish.  This allows the inside to cook and puff, and gives a very crisp outside.  Delicious!

Most of my family is from England, Wales and Ireland, I love my English food and heritage.  Yorkshire pudding is one of my favorites!  I have some old English cookery books with some great recipes in them.  I also play the tin whistle  Smiley

In my part of the UK it tends to be Pollack and Coley which is fine but shouldn't be sold as Cod. Did you know that in Scotland, I'm just south of the border, they deep fry chocolate bars ie Mars Bars etc in batter and serve with chips.

Not exactly my cup of tea, but I thought that was something we only did in the US  Smiley  .    For some odd reason, the Texas State Fair seems to be the mecca for deep-fried oddities.  Here is a sample of some of the "gourmet delights" that have been available in recent years.

I have had deep fried Twinkies.  Deep fried snickers bars are pretty good.  Deep fried cheese cake was too rich.  I have heard deep fried pickles are pretty good, but have not tried those yet.

Nice link.  The deep fried smores look good!  But deep fried butter?Huh?? Yuck!  I can feel my heart slow down just looking at the picture!
