Hello everyone,

I'm a newbie from Toronto (Ontario, Canada) and would like to get into some metal detecting and other "treasure hunting" hobbies.  Sure sounds like a lot of fun, and from scouring these forums I've already learned a lot.  I don't have a detector yet but am keeping my eye out for a good deal.  One of the first things I'm going to have to figure out is what the by-laws in Toronto say about detecting in public areas such as the beach and parks.  I'm also curious about gold prospecting in southern Ontario, if that's even possible.

I'll leave my specific questions for later, just want to say "thanks!" to everyone who's posted so many interesting and educational articles on the site.

Good hunting!
Andréa

from one newbie to another, thanks for joining and welcome!

These guys are very supportive and I will be watching to see the answers here.

My detector is from a garage sale, just keep your eyes open. get to know which detectors will suit what you want to do, what each one costs so you will know a bargain when you see it. from what I have seen so far, fisher f2 and Garrett ace250 are great starter detectors and won't break the bank.

best of luck

poptop - I've read a lot about the Ace 250 but the Fisher F2 was completely off my radar.  I found this comparison video showing how much faster the F2's detection recovery time is - quite impressive, especially considering it's the cheaper of the two.  I'll be keeping my eyes open for one.

Thanks!
Andréa

Hello from Connecticut.  Toronto eh?... Home of my favorite AM radio station 740 Ckfz. Of course can only pick up at night.
I'm sure you will find info of regulations etc for hunting around Toronto.

Welcome  from Vancouver BC .    One thing to remember when comparing detectors is our coins do not register the same as US coins  so in my opinion a machine with number id is a better choice .   I found this out after i got the ace 250 , i dig everything because quarters dimes nickles and toonies come up as junk iron.

so actually you are looking for a "gold detector"?garrett just came out with a nice gold detector.there are alot of gold detectors depending on what you want to spend :)do you want to buy new or used?worst thing you can do is to get in a hurry [nono]take your time check all the machines.-----wjm
