I just joined the forum, and could use some suggestions for coin shooting in the Northern Utah area - Davis County preferably or close by if anyone has some suggestions. I just have an inexpensive older whites metal detector (no meters, or identifiers on it telling me what type of coin/metal it is).. just the 'beep' sound and that's it.

I've scanned a few parks, but got discouraged from all the digging involved in a lawn, so I've done a few sand areas in the parks, but they haven't netted much so far.

Hello, Zul......Welcome to THunting.com.
So what is the challenge with digging the lawn in the parks?  Maybe we can figure out a way to get you over that hump while we look for other areas to search.   (If you check old copies of the local paper or read the memoirs of early settlers, you should be able to figure out where the settlers had picnics, fairs, and other social gatherings and where the old ball parks are.   Those would be good locations)

Now there's something I haven't thought of.. good idea. I heard though that state parks are a no-no?? Is this true? I don't want to get in trouble going into a state park.

Whether state parks is a no-no or not depends upon the state.   You really need to check with the State Parks and Recreation department to find out.

The best thing you can do to make your time in the field more productive is to practice plenty at home, and also plant a test garden.  Get to know your machine and how to get it properly adjusted so that you can actually find stuff.

I am originally from Utah, but now live in Pennsylvania.  There is plenty of history and plenty of places to go here though.  I am new to metal detecting, but am learning quite a bit due to forums such as this one.  Best of luck to ya....
