Sue, thanks for the hints. I only got it last weekend and haven't have much chance to explore. I'll be sure to give the beaches a try. There are so many options it will be hard to choose where to go first! lol

Nice, I've read alot about Leechtown, many years ago were we able to drive there from Shawnigan Lake but I've been told that the roads now have locked gates. Are you going to ride a bike from the Sooke pot holes along the Galloping Goose trail? What are you looking for there? Gold or relics?? Will you be metal detecting? I am busy this weekend but if you are in the area another time and would like to take a newbee along let me know.
Happy Hunting.
Thank you fellow Canuck from Alberta! My daughters live in AB and next time I visit my new detector is coming with me. I can't wait to take my grandchildren out treasure hunting. I have also read that you can find amber in the coal in the Lethbridge area.

It would be great to have someone to share questions and help figure out my darn detector! LOL What type of detector do you use??
I've been out only a few times but haven't found any treasure yet. Some rusty old nails (not even square ones), an old axe head and lots of metal, I've been trying out an old mill site from the late 1890's. This time of year is the only time you can get in the bushes before they grow up with tall weeds loaded with stinging nettles and blackberry bushes. I get lots of signals, sometimes there is something when I dig and sometimes not....got to keep practicing and digging! LOL
Leechtown is a long walk for me (how long a hike from your end?), I don't have a bike which it seems is the way most people are getting there now. How were you planning of getting there? Do you have somewhere in Metchosin where you hunt? I have been researching and have a few ideas around here if you are interested. I get Sat and Sun off. You have a bit of history in the Metchosin area, have you tried to detect on any of the old farms?
Interesting history of Metchosin:

I found someone that went to leechtown a few years ago and thought you might be interested to see the pics he took and what he found. It's on the Canadian Metal Detecting website:

I also posted the story about the leechtown tunnel.

Hey crystalhunter-

Just a thought, might be worth the time, how about the areas around where the winter olympic game crowds are sitting and/or removing their gloves? Watch to see where the food consesions are set up. Might be a load of coins and rings to be found. Just like the sand on beaches, things get lost in the snow instantly.

Good luck,

Welcome to the board!  I too am new to the board.Nothing wrong with the ACE. With practice as you say, you'll get the "bug" really bad. Metal detecting is such a neat hobby. Grin

Couldn't help but notice your location. Just wanted to say the Olympic games that were just completed in Vancouver
were a class act! The opening and closing ceremonies were well coregraphed, beautiful light and sound shows!

Also, congratulations on the men's Hockey Gold! That was a really good game!
