Go Up Go Down

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this (apparently like the majority of these posts) and am looking forward to new adventures.  I am a Cub Scout leader in the San Antonio, TX area and am thinking about having the boys do a treasure hunt for a summertime activity and somehow linking it to the 100 anniversary of Scouting in America.  I plan on incorporating several aspects of the scouting program into this series of events such as map and compass, local history, conservation, leave-no-trace, collecting and probably a couple others as I start making the plan.  I hope to start with a tour of the Alamo and a talk by the curator (conservation of significant historical items) and potentially one of the park rangers about the laws.  From there, we'll start with a GeoCache and work our way to up to researching a local (or near by) story and go from there.

My goal is for the boys to have fun and learn something along the way.  Our treasure hunt should be something interesting for the boys, not intended to be a retirement plan for them.  Anyway, if any of you have any ideas or suggestions please feel free to email me...I'd love to hear them.

Thanks,
Dave

Welcome, Dave......Fortunately there is a lot of history in San Antonio that would interest Cub Scouts (having been both a cub scout and a boy scout there).   Don't forget the Mission Trail as well as the potential of the Hemisfair site.

I was long out of there by then.  (I was actually over there as a dependent.  My wife and I graduated from BAHS in 1973 and my younger brother in 1976.   A couple of years after that my dad got transferred to the Zweibrucken area.  Dad managed to get back over there about 4 or 5 years ago for an extended stay).

If any of you happen to be in the San Antonio area and are looking for something to do....feel free to let me know, I'll need all the help I can get!  I just spoke with the boys about it and they all seem very excited about the idea.  I'll keep everyone posted on the progress as we go along.

Sounds like some nice ideas. Some of those might be more for the Boy Scouts as the Cubs seem to have a shorter attention span. The cubs will love the geocache. Maybe you could "seed" the cache with some Scout patches.

btw... my father has been a registered Scout for over 81 years!
