participating on the forum. I'll be 58 years young in May and way back in the early 70's while in college, I purchased a White's metal detector and that was my start in the hobby. I only was active for a few years and though I had numerous finds, I completely got away from the hobby except for just a few days over all these years. I still have my original White's and it's in tremendous shape. I have it packed away and don't even remember the model. I now would like to return to the hobby on a regular basis and with all the technological changes over the years, I would greatly appreciate some help in purchasing a new metal detector. Money isn't a factor in my purchase, but I'd want to make sure I get the best possible model for my needs. I'll be doing some detecting at the beach, but much more inland. I'm more of the coin and jewelry chaser, but relics are also of major interest. I'll purchase multiple detectors if the need arises. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Also, where you feel the best deals can be had would be a big help. When I do a search, it appears that almost all the sellers are at the same price for the detectors. The only difference seems to be in the "freebie" package they include. I'm looking forward to sharing my finds in the near future.  Detecting

Welcome from Galveston Texas.

I suggest you google Kellyco and check out the MD there.

Thanks for the reply. I actually was on the phone with someone at Kellyco and the conversation gravitated toward the expensive line of detectors. A White's Spectra V something, the MXT 300?, a Minelab ETRAC, or Explorer SE Pro. Money isn't the issue, but I'd hate to fork over the big bucks, when a somewhat less expensive model would do the job nicely. What can I expect to get in the 500 to 800 dollar range? Also, if I'm going to spend that much, should I just go for something top-of-the-line, or at least close to the top? Kellyco has this buy one get one deal and since my wife also wants to join the hobby, I figured I could get one for her in that manner. The problem is I have no idea how good the detectors are that you get at a small percentage of their normal price with that deal and I want to be sure I get her a good machine.

Best,
Dom

Hi Abe,   welcome to the forum.   One thing you will discover is the new detectors are much lighter than your old detector.    Have considered a used detector?   You can usually pick up some decent deals on good Garrets, Fishers, Whites, Minelabs and Tesoros used.

Thanks BA - Can you make a recommendation as to a few of the models I should look at if I go the route of buying used? Also, should I purchase new machines, I'd appreciate your thoughts on possible models to focus on. I want to be sure I'm getting something worthwhile.

Much Appreciated,
Dom

Clevenger Detector Sales Kansas City, MO is probably one of the best pricewise and service wise. Mr. Chuck Clevenger owns and operates this business and he's always been really fair in his dealings with me. He ships by ups for free for anything over $100. He will send you a price list free.

Kellyco in Winter Springs, FL is another place that does well and has decent prices. They don't have free shipping on anything over $100 like clevenger, but will send a free catalog.

Dom, when I look for a metal detector, I first check the reviews at places like

.   Once I find a couple of models that I like, I start looking for those models used.  Some people may argue with my pricing, but when I'm looking I generally consider 1/2 to 2/3 the list price of a new detector as a "reasonable" ballpark price.  The older the model, the further down that scale the maximum I'll pay goes.   Do the first part (deciding which models you are interested in based on features and reviews) will set you in good stead even when you use the dealers already mentioned.

Thanks to all that have replied. It's really appreciated and I look forward to many exchanges once I settle on a model and get into the actual metal detecting. Gosh, those finds sure are exciting!! I remember my first diamond ring back in "73". Anyway, I'll keep narrowing it down to a few models and take the plunge in a few days.  Grin
