Im from Johannesburg - South Africa.
My advice is to leave the gold hunting for a safer place.
One minute you think youre here for a treasure hunt , the next moment youre getting robbed or killed.
Not to mention the fact that you will be needing to get into private property to do your treasure hunting ,
we dont look kindly to people tresspassing on private property , crime here is very bad.
We dont know if youre tresspassing to commit a crime ,
usualy people who are where they dont belong are up to no good.
We have highest murder per capita in the world second only to South America.
Some people are friendly and might be willing to let you do your treasure hunting on national property but if they find out what you are looking for , you will be asked to leave.

My advise , STAY AWAY.

Also , if youre looking for the lost Kruger Millions (Im looking for that aswell), good luck ,
if you happen to find any , the gold belongs to the government and youre not allowed to keep it.
You will have to smuggle it out and thats a felony.

Im sorry to be this blunt but if youre looking for trouble come on over.

We have a very low employment rate and there are many people who live in bad poverty ,
you will mostlikely end up looking for something close to a rural slum (theres slums around every town),
and thats were the danger is , those people have nothing and thats where the crime levels are at their highest.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the warning
I will be flying my principle there for a safari so I'm not going there for my own reasons.
I was just thinking it would be better to go detecting than sitting in my hotel room all day.
I will be in Cape Town for 2 days and then Maun Botswana for 8.
I live in southern California near the town of randsburg and Johannesburg (named after S.A. Joburg). I am a new member to this site and will post some of my finds soon (3 nuggets in December totaling 3.5oz)
Thanks again for your valuable info
Chip

Too bad you can't tag along on the safari just as an observer and just happen to have your md along.

Well in any case, I will bring my beeper with me and "go with the flow".
I'm sure once I'm there I will get the real perspective.
Thanks again for all the warm welcomes and advice.
