I have always love searching for old objects, arrow heads, old coins, old tools, and other types of lost treasures.  I also love looking for fossils in river rocks, and have found many of them just going through piles of gravel at landscaping companies.  I have also have found many walking along the riverside.

as well as a few of the other forums, you will see that a lot of our members share your interests.
While most of us own and use metal detectors, as you so elegantly point out, metal detectors aren't necessary to be a successful treasure hunter.  We'd love to see pictures of some of your treasures if you care to share them with us---regardless of whether you found them metal detecting or not.

     Hope you enjoy the community.

marstraveler, welcome to the board. I'm a newbie at metal detecting. I also surface collect. Mainly arrowheads but I pick up musket balls, pot shards, old iron, barb wire And lost items when I see them. I don't dig, not for points, its not necessary and too much work. If you have trained your eyes for it and you know where to look you will find them. MD has increased the fun of collecting. If you are out looking for points and not finding any, go to the MD. It lets you look under the ground. You have to dig a little but you know something is down there.

There is a lot of skill to surface collecting points. Someone calculated that if all the native Americans were alive today that ever existed in the USA they would be "...standing shoulder to shoulder ,one every square yard ,coast to coast". If that is true you can imagine how many points there are mixed with the soil. Why don't we see more? We don't look.
