Not completely true, Homie. Although I don't think any of the mummies found in the American Southwest were intentionally mummified, there are accounts of treasure hunters and archaeologists coming up with mummified remains along the southern portion of the Pecos River in Texas and a few places west of there.
BA
I found a half side of Beef hanging in a Mine Drift that must be some of the worlds oldest Jerky .
It was still sorta red but so dry it felt like paper if you poked it with a knife or stick.
NO I did not try any of it.
It was back in the Drift fare enough that it must have Desiccated fast enough to stop the Rot but slow enough to hold the color.
Hung up about 5ft off the ground level is the only reason I can think of the Rats or Cats did not get to it.
That and the fact there is NO water around that area for miles.
They used Fence wire to hang it so it can't be that old but I bet is over a 150 years old.
This is the same area there was supose to be a Major Robery of Silver / Gold .
I found it about 18 years ago.
I bet it or what left of it is still there.
You can get as far as you can in any vehical in a pick up.
You have to do the walk over the hill and to the Mine after that.
It's now Private Properties and Patented Claim Properties.
At the Time I was there I came I did not know that.
No Detector, No Tools just Walking and Looking.
Guess I was Trespassing.
