That's so cool! Where did you find the listing online for meteorite impacts and fireballs? I've searched many sites but haven't found one.
From what I've read, meteors usually begin to break apart before impactand pieces fall over a large area known as a strewn field. It's usually an eliptical shape beginning many miles before the final impact.
Even small meteorites and debris are quite valuable. The going price is up to $1.50 per gram. Of the three types ( iron, stony, and iron stony) the iron is most desired and can easily be detected with a metal detector.
These things have been falling for  billions of years. They can be found all over. However, being mostly iron, they do deteriate(rust) from moisture. I would love to help you locate the strewn field there... but distance prohibits it. Good luck if you go searching and please keep me advised.

I dont remember the site, I think it was one of the IU (Indiana University) sites. But it showed a map you could click on, then smaller maps with an outline of the "strewn field" based on finds and weather at the time of impact. It was very interesting, I'm sure you could find something similar online for your state. Try different search words and search engines. I used yahoo search when I found that site. I'll have to go thru my rock collection this winter and see if I may have one in there. Been saving rocks, arrowheads, anything strange I find while detecting since I was a kid. Here's a good site

and here is a pic of a molten looking charred rock I found recently, its not a meteorite or at least its not magnetic, but my detector sure liked it lol.

Interesting topic vision and Duchess.  I checked out the site you posted, vision, and found it fascinating.  Added it to my favorites so I can go there at will.  Lots of great information from what I can see.   I've always been interested but have never specifically hunted them.  Thanks for the info!   Wise

Love the show Meterite men, course we wouldnt be so lucky as to find some of the rocks they find. AND most seem to be in protected areas.

I do to, but I often don't watch it.  Wife has her favorites and we have to share the time!  lol!  Grin

Thanks, and yes I know the feeling. I have what they call a "strewn field" practically in my backyard and still dont look for them! lol  I'd bet the farm though that I have a meteorite or 10 in my rock collection. Since a detector picks them up, I save alot of rocks that my detector likes around here. I go through my stuff in the winter when I'm trapped inside and bored. I'll have to look and have some rocks tested then.

is it just me or do hot looking archeologists get more responses from their new user posts?   Shocked

I'm thinking that archeology is just plain sexier than MDing. Can you imagine coming home from a long day of MDing and found a rock or fossil or meteorite or whatever to take home to your archeoligist wife? She gets excited, you get excited... thats true love there lol. My girlfriends roll their eyes and say "did you find any jewelry today?"
