You would think I should be interested in the Canadian West but at the moment I am researching my Great Grandfather's treasure hunting exploits in South Africa, in particular the wreck of the Grosvenor and Dorothea. I hope to get some interesting information from your membership.

Welcome from Australia!

It sounds like your research will be very interesting. I look forward to reading about it here. Did he leave behind any journals?

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Hello, goldenstar.    Welcome from Arizona.    There are plenty of people here who wouldn't mind hearing some more South African treasure tales.

No journals unfortunately, just snippets I have picked up in my research. He financed 2 attempts at recovery of the Dorothea treasure as recorded in The Wide World Magazine of 1904 Volume 13. He also financed an expedition to the Grosvenor wreck-site in 1880 with a Captain Turner. I believe all that was recovered was some small number of gold coins and beads.

Hi Xavier
I know very little about the Grosvenor other than what was told me by my grandparents. I think they were ticked off about all of the money spent on the treasure hunt. My grandmother had some relics from the wreck that she showed me, green jade beads I seem to recall. The Grosvenor book says they recovered some cannon but this was never mentioned to me. I wish I was back in SA as I would like to delve into the Dorothea story more fully.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone, I will update you on any progress I make in my research. By the way, the photo is of me on a Sasquatch (big foot) hunt in N. California, checking out some tracks that had been found a couple of days before. Anyway, that is off subject and has nothing to do with treasure hunting!

I don't know.   The first person who finds proof of Sasquatch that is accepted by the 'scientific' community and the 'educated' public in general will have found a real treasure.  (and will probably be able to cash in on in big time, too)

Saw the tracks but who knows if they were real! 13 1/2, 15 1/2, and 17 inch tracks, someone went to great lengths to fake them so far out in the bush! They were reported by the local sheriff. I flew a dog along with it's handler to a town near Bluff Creek in N. California where we spent 10 days looking for further evidence. WOW, we are off subject!

WOW, we are off subject!

Only if you say we are.   It's your member introduction where you allow us to get to know you.  There's nothing that says it has to be confined to "metal detecting" or "prospecting for precious metals, or gems, (or even energy sources)".   If this were not part of an introduction, I'd probably move this to our "Myths and Legends" board, but I wouldn't shut down your discussion.      Treasure hunting takes many forms---what you did can be legitimately included in the broad definition of Treasure Hunting (unless the administrator or my fellow moderators vote me down).

But since you started by asking about South Africa, I'll let you get back to that subject.   Wink
