Hello everybody! I am Dan and am from Southern California. I work the beaches with my old Fisher CZ detectors and will get back out to the desert if it ever cools off. I was thinking about going from VLF to PI, but given the stuff I find after following people with PI machines, I think I will stick to VLF. Would be happy to hear opinions from other people either way. How do the PI machines do on small gold? Thanks for welcoming me aboard and hope everybody gets a little color in their pans!

Howdy, Dan....welcome from Arizona.    before you write off the PI's are the people you're following practicing good search techniques (i.e. slow and steady with good coil coverage or do they look like they're out whacking weeds)?   The best machine in the world isn't going to get the results it should if it's not being used properly

Hi Dan and welcome! Those beaches ought to be producers with all the crowds of people going to them, now, during the record setting heat wave. Sue

Thanks everybody. I'm hitting the beaches early before work each day and am getting a nice assortment of good, bad, and weird stuff. As far as the PI people are concerned, there are some old timers that really know what they are doing and some other people who don't have a clue. I say "Good Morning." to everybody and, if they ask for help, I gladly tell them the basics to get them going in the right direction. It seems like they are missing a lot of stuff on the beach, especially pull tabs and rings. My CZ with a 10 1/2" coil seems to be going deeper, but I can't be sure. I seem to be digging a lot more then they are, but I may just be digging more junk! I would love to get a PI machine to complement my Fisher detectors, especially for gold prospecting, but the are so EXPENSIVE! I just don't want to drop $4500 on a Minelab and get skunked when my current machines seem to be doing a good job despite their age.

Every time i go to the beach i see several people using metal detectors and i'm amazed at how fast they walk and how they swing  the coil 8 to 10" off the ground and at the end of the swings the coil is a foot or more off the ground, i love to go behind them with the PI machine and do a lot of digs and watch them look at me like they can't believe that i'm digging up treasure. I have had some come back to me and ask what i was finding?

So like all detectors if used properly should have good results.

Good Luck
