I am new to this forum and new to metal detecting. So new in fact that I have not purchased my first metal detector. I am trying to decide between the e trac and the GTI 2500

"HEY" from N.Carolina.  [welcome]to T-Hunting. I dont know what to tell you on
which detector to buy. It depends on what type of detecting and where you will
be using it most. I am an ACE 250 user and love it but its not the greatest for
salt water hunting. I prefer dirt digging but i will go to the beach and hit the dry
sand area. There is a lot of reading on here for about all brands and opinons. You
will find a lot of help. LOL ARR!

Welcome you came to the right place, this is the best forum on the net for treasure hunting. Look thru the forums for info on any detectors in your price range. As far as the 2 you mentioned....there is no comparison, the E trac is the clear winner there. I have an excalibur 2 and love it, although I will never buy a new minelab, customer service, and the fact that they are in australia is a deal breaker for me. I'm sticking with Fisher, Whites, Garret in that order because they are USA made. I bought a new fisher F2 a few months ago and the excalibur is collecting dust ever since because of the type of hunting I do around my area. Dont get me wrong, the excalibur would be my only detector for the beach if I had one near. Just a thought here.........since your completely new, why not spend $200-$300 on a quality, simple to use  detector that will find anything the expensive ones will. If you decide you like the hobby and stay with it, then get an expensive one and use the other as a backup, or it would be easy to sell that type of detector. The learning curve on the expensive detectors is high for anyone let alone a newbie. I would cut my teeth on a fisher F2 if I were you, Ive been doing this over 30 years and I love mine.
