Go Up Go Down

I'm quite new to this hobby. I don't have a detector yet. I'm in the process of doing my home work before making a purchase. I have learned that I will need two detectors, one for land and one for the beach. I'll be near Florida beaches this coming winter so I have time to study my options. I'm leaning toward a Whites dual field for the beach. I am anxious to start searching for coins here in Indiana and will probably get a Garrett Ace 250. I'd be grateful for any suggestions from those of you that have been at this for a while.

Howdy, EZdiggen.

Welcome to THunting.com.    Both of the detectors you've listed are good for their intended purposes.   Have you searched our forum to see what has already been written on the subject?  Try "best detector" in the search box at the top of the page and show the entire forum.

By the way there's no reason why you have to have 2 different detectors.  Most of the submersibles will work fine on land too....it's just that with the PI you'll be operating in all metal mode with out much discrimination.   If your budget can swing it, add the Minelab excalibur II to your list of detectors to consider (as well as the Tesoro's).

Thanks for the reply and suggestions BA. I'll be doing a lot more reading on beach machines. I won't be diving with a metal detector, probably just waist deep searching. I know a good scoop is essential too. I won't be back in Florida until December, so I have plenty of time to decide.

Hey EZ Welcome from Texas

As BA said you can get by with just one good detector look into the ones he suggest you might find one you like better.

Thank you for all the welcome messages. I need to update my introduction a little bit. I found a nearby MD dealer and made a trip to his store. I did get a good look at the Ace 250 but after I told him of my desire to beach hunt he showed me a Whites Beach Hunter 300 and an Minelab Excalibur. After a long discussion and a quick look at my bank account I opted for the Beach Hunter 300. I'll be playing with it in my yard this evening and trying to get up to speed with it. The dealer did tell me that he will take me out for an instructional session. I thought I was going to have to use mail order to get a MD, I'm sure glad I found this dealer.

Hi Bugar,

I'm in Mishawaka, next to South Bend. We have a few miles between us. I really don't know any other detectorists in the area I did find a detector store today where I purchased my Beach Hunter 300. The shop has a gathering of hunters the last Tuesday of the month, so I just missed my chance to meet some other folks that do this hobby. Thanks for the welcome Bugar and good luck hunting.

EZ, I think you'll like your Beach Hunter....Just remember that like most other things you do, it will take time and patient practice to really get to know your machine and to get the most out of it.   Meeting with other hunters on a regular basis can be a good idea (I know belonging to a club has helped my wife and I, as has spending a lot of my non-hunting spare time here).
