Go Up Go Down

Hi everyone!

I'm new to the sight but now new to metal detecting. I'm no expert but went with my father back in the 70s and 80s when we lived in Louisiana. I learned on a Garrett BFO which is still in the family. Dad had a Garrett TR which I don't know what happened to it. We mostly relic hunted Civil War. We also hunted house places and parks. Our last detector dad bought was a Garrett Groundhog S2.

We moved to Kentucky in 84 and stopped metal detecting. I would go every now and then with the S2 and found change. I still have the S2 and it still works it's at my brothers. I plan on letting him keep it for I bought a Master Hunter 7. I hope it comes in this week. I still have a fondness for these older machines. I can't wait to try it out. I plan to get an Ace 250 so I'll have a new detector. Last detector I would like to have is an older White like 6000 coinmaster. My uncle would hunt with us in the 80's and used the blue box Whites. Him and dad would debate which brand was better! HaHa

Any clubs near West Kentucky? I know there is one by Nashville. I may join it.

Thanks everyone,
Michael

Go Up Go Down

I hunted my yard for an hour. I used the factory marked settings on my Master Hunter 7. I got 2 pull tabs before I stopped using all metal mode and used the discriminate with the setting on pull tabs. I found 2 1944 wheat pennies by my front steps, a 2in piece of copper pipe like used in waterheaters. Last I got a nice blister and a back ache.. Grin Why I'm getting into this hobby again! The exercise! I need to go get some digging tools. I just used a knife. The pennies were 5 inches in the ground. The meter tells you how deep and was spot on. Also tells you what you found but kinda off. I read this is normal. I need to cable tie the cable close to the plug. This detector has the same problem as the Ace 250 I been reading about. I'll get it in time! Tomorrow I'll play some more around the house. This house is 30's house. I'm hoping they lost some silver in the yard! I'll take the old pennies though!! Not bad for a novice!!

Thanks for the  warm welcome!!

Michael

Go Up Go Down

I hunted in the back yard today. Found a brass key plus 3 clad pennies from the 80s, 2 clad dimes from the 80s, and 2 nickles from the 80's. No silver. Darn!! I am still figuring out ground balance. Not too hard to do. If I discriminate if has auto ground balance. I have been using that but set to discriminate nails. I dug some tabs but oh well I don't want to miss nickels and gold. I think the overhead power lines in the front yard gave me trouble. It was more stable in the back away from them. Still I can't complain. I found coins!!

I don't think the Garrett BFO still works. I'll look at it when I go to my brothers for it's at his house. I might send it off to get repaired. I used it as a teen in the late 70's early 80's at Civil War sites in Louisiana. My dad had more luck with a Garrett TR but I found a bullet or two. I'll take a picture of it. You probably have some good Civil War sites to hunt being on the NC/SC state line Knight. I would love to hunt a CW site!

Happy hunting!!

Michael
