..Whydah Diver..Our Government has been pressured to sign some treaty that says wrecks are "safer" where they are" and doing so ensures that "future generations" may enjoy them (what bullshit.. see Falmouth disaster !)... I personally dislike agencies like NOAA (with WEATHER mandate) dictating to us small nations what we can and cannot do with or/in OUR SOVEREIGN territorial waters..Sovereign countries must be able to make INFORMED choices as to how their historical assets are used for the county's benefit. I am not sure what the OFFICIAL pos. on wreck salvage is, but I'll get back to you...

Goffe: they probably signed the UNESCO treaty which makes any commercial shipwreck salvage illegal. Several countries have done this, effectively leaving the fate of all their wrecks in the hands of a couple of self-righteous archaeologists.

Good luck,

...A friend whom I used to spearfish with 30 years ago, just got in contact, and has told me that a 100 yds. offshore on the south coast, 25 ft water  he came upon 3 cannon back then,.. two were bronze concreted, 5-7 ft long.. no mention in available records of a wreck in this area .. he THINKS there is a ballast pile ..... now all I need is the time and the money...

Sounds interesting. Best to check with the authorities if you do find something, don't want to waste time and money and have them take over everything!

Keep me posted please.

Hello goffe

 Welcome from Australia.

I am no fan of the current trends for countries to sign the UNESCO agreement. It will allow thousands of shipwrecks world wide to rot for all time. Just to keep archeology exclusive and privatization out of the profession.  Angry

Do you do any historical research in the archives in Kingston or St Jago?

Couldn't agree with you more (although I think that is just one example of people rushing to support ideas that sound better than even a cursory examination would show them to be).

I especially feel bad for countries like Jamaica which, with wise local stewardship, could use these resources to increase the general wealth of the local community.

to : hard luck aussie...It seems a bit counter-intuitive to leave wrecks where they are.. particularly in my country where 90% of the populace CAN"T SWIM.. Who then is going to look at these wrecks in "their pristine state"  ?? Its all bullxxxx if you ask me, .. just big nations forcing their will on small ones.. all for the want of some AID...(sigh).. in fact, the people who DO find the wrecks keep quiet, and NO ONE gets to benefit...... a dog chasing his/ her own tail....

Remember that UNESCO and other legislation which supposedly is designed to protect these resources are really a means to limit access to only those who are in the inner sanctum. Most of the people who write these laws have little or no idea what it really means to work on or especially under the water. Telling people they can no longer search for and excavate shipwrecks is doomed to the same fate as telling them they can't have alcoholic drinks anymore, we know how that worked out don't we!

to Whydah diver : Totally agree !!  No matter what law you have in place, humanity and its desires/needs will always out !..only way is consultation ..thereby crafting enforceable, rational legislation. (in any sphere of endeavor! ) .....By the way, are our posts/replies saved in an accessible, historical file somewhere ? If so, how to access ..??
