Hi,

I found several pieces of what looks like melted silver. Need help to identify. They are all odd shaped, some look melted and some have weird lines on them that are going in all different directions. very small lines some triangle shaped and some just little tiny strips going every different direction. they were a dull silver but when i buffed a couple of them they became very shinny and smooth. When I detect them they register as silver in metal mode as well as when I switch to disc. and in notch mode. Could they be solid silver or maybe melted chrome or any other kind of melted metal? How can I find out what they are? I am new to metal detecting so need your help! Thank you! brendab1

Hi Brenda,
And welcome!
From your description they could possibly be "sea worn" Spanish silver "cobs" (pieces of eight).
Did you find them on a beach at all?
I know you can't post pictures until you've posted at least 5 times but do they look anything like this?
If you have some accurate-ish kitchen scales you might want to let us know the weight (in grammes) and the rough size of each.
Best regards
Paul

Howdy, brendab1

Welcome to THunting.com.   I see Paul A has your question well in hand, so I'll settle for "Hello" for now.   Looking forward to reading your posts.

Hi! This is Brenda again. I have received 2 messages. Thank you! I am having trouble answering them so I hope you will read this. To answer your question they are much larger than a coin. I don't think they could be any kind of a coin. I found them on our farm out in a field. As far as we know a tornado came in 1973 and destroyed the home beside the field. We think that they might have burned what was left of the house in the field. My husband thinks that they are melted aluminum. Is that possible! We used a piece of aluminum (not melted) and it showed as silver on the detector. Does anyone have a list of examples that would also show on the detect er as silver? When aluminum melts could it leave those funny markings? These pieces do not look burned. No black on them? Looking forward to your thoughts! Thank You! Brenda

Hi, Brenda.

(the 2 emails you got were actually copies of the posts from Paul A and myself that show between your two posts......posting here is the correct thing to do, unless we send you a Personal Message using the PM application)

Yes, it is possible.   If you search "silver nugget", you'll find several pictures of "nuggets" that turned out to be melted aluminum.   There's also a couple of pictures of a very large piece of melted metal here (

) that is mostly alumimum---but it has chunks of ash and other debris in it.   As far as the markings, as with anything else that is melted, the bottom is going to show the imprint of whatever surface it was on when it cooled.     If it is light weight, it probably is aluminum.   You can always check the specific gravity if you want to be more sure (aluminum will be between 2.5 and 3.0 while silver will be closer to 10.0)

A drop of Lye based oven cleaner will tell you if it's aluminum.

It will fisssss and etch it most well if it is.

 Wise

They do look a bit cob shaped but the one edge shows that they were splashed or pored and not cut.

Hi, It's Brenda again. Thank you all for the information and help. I will try the oven cleaner test. This is a cool site and everyone is very helpful. I look forward to learning a lot from you all. Happy Treasure Hunting! Brenda from Kentucky P.S. I hope you had better luck than I did today. I found 1 Quarter and a wheat penny. Ha Ha at least I didn't go home with just 5 pull tabs, 2 bottle caps and 3 rusty nails! I made 26 cents today!
