Howdy folks,

It's Steve here from Wellington, New Zealand.
I have been looking around here and I am mighty impressed with the level of knowledge and understanding that the members have in the scientific principals behind metal detection.
My own metal locating experience is minimal, but started at the age of 13 when I designed and built a really terrible metal detector.
It actually worked, and I was able to locate all sorts of completely useless junk.
Oh, the joy of locating and recovering such gems as old paint cans  Wink .

Looking at the various methods of metal detection, I am amazed at the brilliance behind the designs. As an electronics enthusiast myself, I hope that I will be able to offer some assistance when technical questions arise in the forums.
The Pic Micro has been a powerful ally in my design processes over the past few years, and I think that it could serve well in the numerous designs that are appearing on the net. Indeed, this small device could eliminate a large number of the components, or is that componii?, thereby making it easier for the first time builder to create their very own masterpiece  Smiley .
Perhaps the Pic Micro will lend itself well to the Pulse Induction metal locator design. That will be an interesting technical challenge.

I have a metal locator here. The technology is very basic, but it locates buried metal, glass and rocks, usually while I am digging post holes on my farm  Wink .
It's a 'shovel based' system, and operates for hours on the energy content of just a single can of baked beans  Wink .
My other metal locator is a chainsaw. It has an uncanny knack of locating the only nail in a huge Macrocarpa tree, usually just after I have sharpened the blade.

Hmmm, perhaps I should build one of these wonderful designs I am seeing here and there  Smiley .
It sure would be a smart way to avoid those nasty obstacles here on the farm   Detecting.

Best wishes,
Steve.

Howdy Hardluck,

Ahhh, I wish Wellington was more windy, as that's how I get my electricity on the farm. Wind and solar, that is.
Instead, we have been enjoying lots of warm and calm weather. Just right for flying my model helicopter.
Poor old Wellywood gets a hard time about its wind, but I think someone has broken the big fan Undecided  .

I look forward to joining in with some of the conversations. If I can be of help, that would be rather splendid, by joves  Smiley .

Best wishes,
Steve.

Hello Steve-tee

I was in Wellington in August last year and the whole time I was there the weather was perfect. Sun shining and no wind at all. Cheesy Before I went there people from there warned me about the bracing weather. So maybe it is not windy as they make out. Wink

Had a lovely day exploring the old quarantine station on the island in the bay. Cool

I imagine some of those beaches in the bay might be worth detecting.

Howdee Hardluck,

It used to be very windy about 15 years ago. Now I have a theory on why the wind stopped so suddenly.
It goes like this:

I built a number of electric wind turbines on my farm.
Naturally, the wind is going to stop when you find a good use for it  Wink .
So, you see, it's all my fault   Cry

Wellington is a nice place, and you get to see it in all it's glory from the sky when flying into and out of the city  Smiley .
You'd probably find obscenely large amounts of treasure on those beaches, so bring your metal locator next time you come to see us Kiwis  Smiley .

Best wishes,
Steve.

Hello Steve-Tee

So it must of been some of your wind turbine I saw when I flew in last year? Your overlooking the Cook strait behind Wellington?

Howdee Hardluck,

Ahhh, they be a wee might bigger than mine Smiley .
I have seen mine from the aircraft on one occasion. Sometimes, we fly south, over my property, before turning north for the flight to Auckland.
Those windfarms are certainly impressive, and I would just love to have a couple of those giants here  Smiley .
My biggest turbine is but a wee pipsqueek in comparison with the massive machines that have begun appearing on the hills near the city  Pray

Best wishes,
Steve.

Howdy, Steve-Tee.   Now that you've made your official introduction, here's my official welcome from Arizona. Wink   I've got a feeling you'll fit in well here.  At the very least, you'll keep the other tinkerers and electronic wizards nimble.
