Looking to buy my 1st one!

Go Up Go Down

Hi there! Obviously I'm new and not a geologist either lol I want to buy a detector and get out of the house. Hoping I find a diamond ring or even a silver dollars might motivate me to get up off my butt and get some exercise!

I would love to hear recommendations for this purchase. So far I think vie figured out you don't have to buy the most expensive detector to get the job done, but the choices are so overwhelming I need help, so here I am...........

You're in good company. First of all, welcome to these forums. You'll enjoy yourself just reading, trust me on that.

You can't go wrong with an Ace 250 or Ace 350 from Garrett. Both are far better than their price indicates and both are considered entry level machines.

Howdy, Charleecrat.......let not your heart be troubled.  Plenty of help and opinions here.
If you want a good safe bet, go with either of the two GD suggested.  If you want to get a little more involved in the selection process, use the search function at the top right and search for "best detector" to read what's already been written here.   (you might very well decide to go with one of those two, or you might opt for a Tesoro or a Whites or a Fisher F4).
Like buying a new car or a new camera, part of the fun is learning how to get past the dealer hype.

   Oh, yeah.......welcome to the group.

I should have added that for most beginners, the budget drives the selection more than the machine. Figure out how much you have to spend and go hit KellyCo for a few hours of viewing. BA is right. There are a lot of good models out there and you will be more confused than ever after you search here for the best detector suggestions.

One thing you will find, though, is that these Garrett machines are often at the top of the selection list along with any Tesoro machine.

Welcome from New Mexico.

There a more then a few good machines out there for say $250.00 to $350.00 range.

Most important is what kind of hunting do you want to do?

Thank y'all so much. I'm in Texas I guess I'll be hunting parks, lakes and places like that for coins and jewelry. I dream about going to Florida for that shipwreck way back in the 1700's that sent Europe into a recession. It's 60 miles north of palm beach , a place called turtle cove. I'm sure I would need an underwater detector for that and if I ever get to go I could rent one I suppose but for now just round the town coins and such will have to do.

buy a good dependable starter like one of the one's GD mentioned or one of the Tesoro and then use the clad coins you find to help pay for a submersible model down the road.   By then, you'll have a good idea what to look for in a detector and will know how to research the specific makes/models.

Good point, there will be three of us, so more than likely will get at least one more down the road if we start fighting over whose turn it is, lol...

Let me ask this, is a pinpointer worth the extra money?

I'm old school......I think everyone should learn to pinpoint with their detector.

That being said, lot's of people find that it saves them a whole lot of time and frustration to use a pinpointer.   And others think it's just one more piece of equipment to have to lug around in the field.

My personal recommendation is a) work hard on learning to pinpoint using your detector, but b) either buy an inexpensive pinpointer or see if you can borrow someones and see if it makes a difference for you....If it does, then get one and use it.  If it doesn't, don't (but don't pass the opportunity to try other models in the future if you see someone who is using one and they really like it).
