Hello all, My name is Cody and I am the owner of Idaho Prospecting supply .com    I am in Boise Idaho near Idaho City.  I detect with A Gold Bug II and will go after gold with whatever is available.  Sluice, pan, high banker, dredge, you name it.  I sold all my aluminum sluices and am now using ABS drop riffle sluices exclusively.  Contact me if you want to know more about mining in Idaho, or my mining store.  CODY

Well as far as mining in Idaho is concerned we have gold pretty much all over the state.  Closest to me is the Black Hornet mine and the Adelman Mine,  Of course Atlanta and Silver City are loaded with mining history.  JR Simplot mined Taters all over the state.  He was probably the most successful of all the Gold or Potato miners.  There are tons of old towns that have never been detected.....at all!   Chinese coins and artifacts are found all over Idaho left behind by Chinese miners.  Miles and miles of the Oregon trail cross Idaho as well as Indian trails and camps way to numerous to list.  Gems and minerals are all over Idaho, After all we are called the Gem State.  My little gem,

is a great source for sluices, high bankers, trommels, wild stories and more.  I will be posting pics of Idaho, Gold, My finds including bottles, arrowheads, stone tools, gems and minerals, and of course my friends.  I will probably post some pics of food or interesting things I think you might like to see as well.  CODY

hi Cody, and Welcome to the forum from Utah! I think it would be fund to pan for gold, but never dabbled into that category. Someone told me that a good place to look in streams is where the 'black' sand is at. Is that true, or is there other signs of potential gold sites that would be more promising?

Everybody thinks I promote them so hard because I sell them.  Kind of.  I dont mind finding big piles of black sand full of gold or fresh tailing piles that have already been classified because that is some easy gold if you have a drop riffle sluice.  If you are anywhere near Boise or Idaho City I would be glad to let you give one a try.  They are less finicky about angle and water flow than an Aluminum sluice, lighter weight, and get almost all the gold, even the finest flour.  I am doing the mining and prospecting supply thing full time now so I have time to let folks try these hands on.  CODY

Hey Cody
I really like like the looks of the hand crank trommel. It's got my gears turning. I could use something like that on my recirc high banker

They are getting pretty popular here in Idaho.  It used to be that trommels were large and stationary.  Some folks have even motorized this model.  I havent because i like the fact it is hand powered.  If you are near Idaho I would let you try one out if you were interested.  I will have some videos pn the site in about 3 weeks.

Sorry zul32,  almost forgot to answer your question.  Black sand is heavy and gold and black sand usually get deposited together.  if both are in the area that is.  A friends yard in Idaho City is full of small flakes of Gold but oddly no black sand is present, at least not in any large amount.  A 5 Gallon bucket yielded about 1/4 cup of black sand.  Some places nearby yield a cup or so per pan.  And some of those black sand rich areas dont have much gold at all.  a Gold pan is the best way to tell if an area has Gold or not.  Has gold been found near your location in the past?  If so there is some still there for sure.  If you tell me what town your in I will see if I can find some info on your nearest Gold deposits.  Hope this helps

I have a tiny lil plastic backpack sluice and I think it catches as much or more than my 4' keene. I was planning on building a bigger plastic one but I think I see an easier option  Grin
