Howdy OntheTrail,

      Welcome to the site.

I moved to Phoenix from Albuquerque 14 years ago.   Both New Mexico and Arizona have lots of areas to do all types of metal detecting.  Any particular part of New Mexico you're interested in?  Or any special type of location?   Have you scanned the different sections of the board yet?

I don't know much about the battle of ojo caliente, but I do know you're in a great area to search.    I always thought it be great to be able to search the bottom of the Rio Grande Gorge for all the stuff tourist dropped.

Besides the wagon trails, your going to have a lot of timber, trapping, and mining camps to look into---just make sure you keep track of who owns the land your hunting on (especially when it comes to Indian or Federal jurisdiction).....get a good BLM land use map for the areas you want to hunt.

If you get over by the town of Red River, I know there are/were a couple of interesting log cabins just off the main trail south of the middle of town.

You're also not too far from the Santa Fe trail.  Lot's of stuff got dumped off of wagons along that trail.

And even though Taos is a long way from Albuquerque, if you make it down to Albuquerque go to UNM and find their map collection.  (When I was there, the maps were in the Technology library).   They have a very good collection of Sanborn Fire Insurance maps for New Mexico.   Those will help you figure out what used to be on vacant lots and what types of buildings and business existed where in the old days (really helpful for towns that have gone ghost like Kelly)

Looking forward to seeing some of your finds.

You are welcome.   For the Santa Fe trail, you can start here

.    I'm also pretty sure that National Geographic has run at least one map of it in the past.   If you want a paper copy, there are probably several places to order one on the net.  You should also be able to pick up a copy at the Kit Carson Museum or at Fort Union.
