Hello. I am new here and am glad to be here. I am thinking about buying a metal detector from Harbor Freight Tools. Can anyone give me some heads up on their $40.00 9 function model?? Thanks.

Hello usmcman , the detector you want to purchase is Made in China and was also sold at radio shack #630-3003 and is also called Famous trails . It is a entry Level , beginners Metal Detector . If you are on a super tight budget and have to buy it ,  you will be "very , very disappointed" !!! Big 5 sporting goods , a nation-wide U.S sporting goods chain with a  very good reputation has a sale every week on Bounty Hunter , which are excellent beginner to intermediate level Machines . Here are a few to look for when they go on sale :

1. Bounty Hunter "Outback" $99 dollars  - Beginner
2. Bounty Hunter "Fortune Hunter" $129 Dollars - low intermediate
3. Bouty Hunter the "Elite" $139 Dollars - "great" intermediate"

Best Regards and have a Great Week !..........................Eugene52

Welcome to the forum!

Eugene, is right. A cheap metal detector unfortunately will not get you any finds and thus not give you much joy in the end. You should try to find either a Fisher F2, Garrett Ace 150 oder Gartett Ace 250 2nd hand e.g. on eBay. They can be pikced up for maybe 125 - 175.00 USD and will be best the cheapest reliable entry models.

Best wishes,

Christian

Hello usmcman and everyone. Do not forget craigslist.org in your area !!! Excellent prices on used metal detectors . Not as many listings as e-bay but e-bay in the U.S. is overpriced and too commercial !............ Waveing.........Eugene52

Thanks to all who posted. I think I am going to give this Kingtronic a try from Harbor Freight. Just went to the store and it is a collapsible model I can keep in the back of my Jeep. Thanks for all the heads up on the other cheap versions as well.
