Hey folks, I live in a former swamp in southern Ontario, lots of clay, surely a river or ocean at one time.
Any chance there's gold here?, How might I find it?

Gold is found nearly everywhere on planet earth from minute quantities to great nuggets or veins. Even the sea contains gold in the salt water we swim in. I suspect you really mean can it be found in profitable amounts. That question requires you ro prospect a bit to find out. Charles Garrett put out a series of books for the amateur prospector that you would find interesting. Dozens of books on the topic and countless magazine articles have brushed on the subject. There's also a lot of on-line information as Homefire pointed out.

The answer is maybe. Good luck and happy prospecting.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Just now. To lay it to rest, I might enquire as to the likelihood of any sedimentary heavy metals
migrating this far south?

Was I not clear? EVERYWHERE on earth has a potential for gold to gather. Everywhere. The only question is the quantity and the cost to extract it.

When a gold claim is evaluated, it is assayed for the amount of recoverable gold per ton. This will determine how costly it is to extract the gold versus the price of gold at the time. For example, your soil could reveal that gold is there in the assayed quantity of .1 ounces per ton which makes it impractical to mine there. Or, it could be 3 ounces per ton making it quite profitable.

Here in Connecticut, where there has historically been only one gold mine ever, there is still gold in measurable quantities in the soil. Mexico and California are far south of you with great quantities of gold in a variety of places. Now if you want an educated guess, get a geological survey done. Speculation here is worthless but your own prospecting won't be.

What might be the best way to determine?
Core sampling? The loam runs deep.

It's hard to say. A geologist taking a walk with you can give you some advice. A reputable prospector from here who hasn't seen your soil, touched it or run a yard of it through a pan would never attempt to guess. This is a great question but one impossible to answer without being on site. I'm not trying to give you a hard time. This is the reality of looking for gold.

You should focus on learning what it means to prospect for gold. Look into some of the Garrett books I mentioned. You can find them here:

Look under Other Products/Ram Books and then expand the menu until you see books on prospecting. This one would be an excellent choice for starters:

My Self, I would Try to Pan the lowest levels of the Properties.

The Glaciers place gold in places it's not Native to the Areas.

Like GD stated,  Follow his Links and check them out.

Have you looked at the Geological Reports on your area?

There free for the looking.

Go to our Prospectors Talk Board and have a Root Around.

I know we have info in there some place on your area.
