Go Up Go Down

Greetings ppl.
I'm new to detecting though I have always wanted to get into it and am looking forward to starting out. Unfortunately, here in Australia, we only have 200 years of buried metals unlike most of the rest of the world but there is still plenty of surface gold around as well as other metals.
I have just been given a 3010/GC-1010 detector and have spent a couple of hours on the net looking for reviews on it. Seems that it isn't a bad entry level detector though some reviews state that the coil is a bit on the sad side. I was wondering, as it is just a plug in coil, can I buy and replace it with a better one. I'm still a little confused on exactly what or when the display indicates the various types of metals but I am sure that with time and practice, I will figure it all out. Maybe I am just being impatient as I was only given it 12 hours ago and haven't tested it in the field yet. May try a little later on around a old, no longer standing, house site, in the bush not far from where I live. Will also give it a test run at a couple of swimming holes close by as it is water proof and it would seem logical that there would be a fair amount of finds to be had on or near the waters edge. Will also give it a try in a few creeks around the place to see if there is any gold caught up in the cracks and crevices. One creek in particular, I have been told that ppl have panned successfully in, so should be worth the look. I'll get back to here to let ppl know how I went. Anyone with any tips for me or places they can suggest to try will be most appreciated.
Look forward to hearing bout everyone else's success.
Z.

Hello, Z.   Welcome from Arizona.
I moved your post over here to the New User Introduction board so you can get teh welcomes you deserve.
Patience is the key to this hobby.   If you haven't got it, you'll either develop it or you'll head off to greener pastures.
As for changing the coils.....that depends on a whole lot of factors (which the more technical members will go into in greater detail, I'm sure) including the operating frequency for the coil and the machine and the connector type.   Not all coils are interchangeable....in fact not all coils from the same manufacturer work on all machines in that manufacturers lines.

Welcome from New Mexico.

I can't seem to find were they offer any other coils then the One it comes with.

Here in the US they Import them from China and Flog them.

Prospects don't look so good.

Ace Distributors, LLC in Westmont, IL is a private company categorized under Merchandise Brokers. Current estimates show this company has an annual revenue of $130,000 and employs a staff of approximately 2.

Welcome from the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon.  Congrats on getting into the hobby.  Do you have an operator's manual for the detector?  If you don't but can get your hands on one it will benefit you greatly.  Study it pretty thoroughly if and when you get one and practice, practice, practice in the field!  Detecting  If you can't find anything about them on this forum, do a search on your favorite search engine for "metal detector manuals."  Good luck with that and with your experience metal detecting.  Sounds like you have the right attitude.  Get out there and search!   Rider

Well I am no longer a  detecting virgin, like I said I went out to a old house site in the bush not far from home. Started off with the detector set on all metals then turned it down to more discriminating once I got a hit. Ended up with 2 Australian pennies. One 1950, one 1940. Not worth a whole lot but still my first finds and only took about a hour. Still figuring out what the tones mean and how to understand the gold, silver and other metals settings but I'll get it cause I am a persistent sod. I also found a stainless screw and a brass screw on my way to the site as well as a old iron minas the handle at the same location as the pennies. Left them though cause I got enough junk already. Now all I got to do is get some lithium rechargeable batteries so that I always have good power to the detector. Cheap batteries, I figure, won't allow the detector to preform to its optimum.
Will keep u informed as more finds come to the light of day. Now for my first gold ring.............................................................. lol Smiley Z.
