Welcome aboard from Oz! You know. Where Dorothy went after she was picked up in Kansas.

Try picking up a copy of Lost Treasure Magazine or go to their web site.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Hi onally & welcome. I'm in Lawrence. Have you picked up any of the brochures from the Franklin County historical group? They are loaded with lots of 'interesting places' with maps - I think the county is divided into quarters and there's a brochure for each. A guy gave me a book of treasure tales and Silkville, southwest of Ottawa, is mentioned. I'll share it with you, if you're interested - my opinion is that it's fiction though. Sue

Go Up Go Down

In 1866, a colony was established for the purpose of making silk. The head of Silkville, a rich Frenchman named de Boissiere, supposedly kept a large sum of money hidden around the place - possibly in the orchard. According to the tale, de Boissiere went to France to visit relatives and, while there, died. The colony soon broke up and the silk business abandoned. "A considerable fortune awaits recovery somewhere near the site of de Boissiere's elaborate chateau at the old Silkville location."

I looked up the story of Silkville online and the end of Silkville doesn't really match the tale above. That's why I thought the tale might not be accurate.

Here is another: In 1857 a stranger camped on the banks of the Wakarusa River near the old Greene cabin, 10 miles W of Clinton. He had several bags of gold coins that he'd cached before he turned in for the night. His body was found floating in the river the next a.m. by Albert Greene. The bags of gold were never found. I don't know if this area is, now, part of the lake or not.
