Go Up Go Down

Hello, all. Thanks for encouraging participation.

I am interested in all sorts of local archaeology, and would not leave a gold coin or an ancient sword or a space-alien's lunchbucket behind, if I tripped on one of these in the woods.

But mostly I work around the farm, and periodically lose things..like my belt-knife.  Once, my dog found it in the cow-meadow a year later and came up to me carrying it.

I wore that one out, and since have lost two more, one SOMEWHERE along my mile of rugged brambly driveway.  The snow has melted, but wind has drifted leaves over much of it now

You all know where this is going.....I want to build myself a metal detector  I imagine a search coil perhaps a foot wide and five feet long.  I want to be able to detect things like a belt knife or crescent wrench or an old engine under six inches of air and a foot of leaves or earth or cow manure.  Treasure chests in lead coffins sixteen feet down?  I'll leave those for you guys.

I am just beginning my education...got at least on schematic for a BFO unit, which it looks like I can build.....better suggestions welcomed, but I expect to read a lot of posts and do a lot of other searching before I have any intelligent questions.

Thanks!

magneticanomaly ; sounds like u have been lurking here for a while now,
And even found the elevator to the 4th floor A.R.T. area..  Cheesy Cheesy

Have u tried the search engine located in the upper right corner??

I have only built one detector out of a kit and it was years and years ago,
and i screwed it up cause it would never find anything deeper

Hello, magneticanomaly.

If you're really interested in building detectors, I suggest you spend a lot of time on our Tech Talk boards.   That's where you'll find your answers.  I also hope you're building a detector because the idea intriques you instead of because you think you'll wind up with a detector that is either cheaper or better of both because if you think you can do it better and cheaper you'll probably be sadly disappointed and frustrated (or you'll wind up getting rich by actually succeeding)

Welcome aboard, first of all.

There is a brilliant PI project here where one of our members is selling PC boards for the project and a full kit of parts for around $60.00 or so. It uses Pulse Induction technology and you can basically build a coil any size you wish to assist in your surface scanning. That's what you're doing, right? Surface scanning? You're not looking for deep stuff.

Thanks, all, for the warm welcomes!

Golddigger, where would I find the thread on the $6o PI kit?

I also found reference to an improved BFO design by member Cornelius, but failed to find the schematic that was supposed to be at start of thread. Perhaps I need to become more adept at searching the forum.  Schematic for a detector thread detector?

My immediate need does seem to be near-surface.  I ploughed snow off the road several times since losing the latest knife, but rolled a little dirt, too, here and there, so it is possibly under a few inches of soil or gravel or leaves or...

I like the idea of a very oblong coil, because it seems it would allow scanning a large area in less time.  I even imagine trolling the thing on a long wooden pole behind the tractor.  Initial indication would be imprecise, too, somewhere under that large coil, but it seems you could then turn coil 90 deg and get an "X marks the spot"

Only my wide-eyed ignorant speculation so far. Much more reading to do.
