Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum, but not new to hunting. Been hunting meteorites now since Aug. of 2007. Interested in rockhounding, nuggetshooting and mostly meteorite hunting. Here to learn more about nuggetshooting and to help contribute and share my knowledge of meteorites with those who'd like to know more about meteorites and meteorite hunting.

Thanks for the welcome! There are actually 13 meteorites and an impact crater that have been found in Ohio! 8 of those are iron meteorites, 1 doubtful iron, and 4 stone meteorites. The crater is in Fayette County, Ohio I think...

How does one make a determination as to where a meteorite has hit>?   What do I look for?  Here in Kansas we have lots of wide open space with few people around, so if one hits, there is a chance no one ever saw it.

If you're talking about fresh meteorite falls, or what we in the meteorite world call a "new fall" then it's hard to determine where the meteorites are. It's kind of like nuggetshooting, in that you don't know exactly where the nuggets are, but research can tell you where to look. Kansas actually has LOTS of meteorites! 157 to be exact. Including the world famous 1400 pound Brenham Pallasite main mass which is the largest oriented pallasite meteorite in the world, found by Steve Arnold of Meteorite Men.

Finding a meteorite is not easy. Some are on the surface, some older meteorites which fell a long time ago are buried like gold nuggets, and you'll need a detector.

Hunting new falls is my favorite. They only happen once in a while, but it's an adventure unto itself. To hop in a car, or jump on a plane, travel across the country to a faraway meteorite strewnfield is an amazing adventure.

You have to have accurate data though. Now we use Radar data, video of the fireball event, and eyewitness accounts to compile enough information to determine a search area. Then we start to hunt. It helps if a local will come forward with a freshly fallen meteorite. This allows to pinpoint exactly where to start the search.

Here's a couple "in situ"  photos of a Wisconsin Meteorite I found. Notice the black fusion crust.

This is what you're looking for.

Welcome to THunting.com.  Nice to have an experienced (and successful) meteorite hunter on board.  There are others on the site, but the ratio of those of us who are interested in meteorite hunting vs those who have successfully hunted meteorites is such that we can always use tips.

Thanks BA! I've got to say, if it weren't for the kind help and knowledge that some professional meteorite hunters shared with me when I started I wouldn't have been where I am today. I'm very thankful and hope I can help you guys too.

By the way, I love meteorites, and I want to share my addiction! Wink

Where in AZ are you? Anywhere near Kingman, Phoenix, or Prescott? I have friends there too...

Eric

P.S. Some motivation for you in the photo. These meteorites were found by a local in WI.

Cool Beans!   Welcome to the Forum.

What do you think about all the Huooobla about BLM and other Fed's laying claim to finds on federal and public lands?

As I see it,  any and all materials collected will eventually fall under the 1906 Antiquities Act .

Sense every thing on earth is comprised of Star Dust,  Is it a Antique?
