I'm out surfing, doing some research about detectors. I'm looking at the Minelab 5000. I'm a newbie to detecting but I live in Alaska and spend a lot of time in Utah. Any background info on the device would be appreciated. Or any other recommendations...

Hi unnet and welcome from London via Australia,

now no doubt the 5000 is the the dogs b75'#/  but if the money is your concern then take a good look at the home grown

machines like the Whites TDI and the TDI PRO coz you can use that machine for relic hunting as well as nugget crunchin

hello, unnet.   Welcome from Arizona.

If you can afford the Minelab 5000, it has a well deserved reputation.   If the price tag is going to cause you issues there are other detectors that will meet your needs until you are sure you a) enjoying detecting  and b) have recovered enough gold to afford the Minelab 5000 without busting the bank (but then by that time you might just decide to stay with the detector that got you there  Smiley )

Thanks guys. I know the GPX is pricey, but I'm hoping I can recover the cost and then some this summer.
I have a good friend who is a big time placer miner who has a lot of satellite geo data he will let me use. What's the learning curve like with these machines?

Well they have got alot pre programed in and it's got 8 differant soil timings plus what ever else is in there so you got

some home work ahead of you with that one, but you can always drop a line to minelab in oz and ask Nenad Lonic,

or speak to minelab USA, just remember the coils arn't waterproof so no playing in the river with it.

No Homie thats why alot of folks use coiltek coils on them, I would'nt even use my GP 3500 on wet grass in fear of stuffing

a $500.00 coil. and wait til you go to buy the battery whoa now that will really hurt Cry Cry

the battery on the 3500 was a gel cel and about 100 - 120 dollars

Is it easy to ruin a coil? What are some good waterproof ones? Do the waterproof coils work as well as the non-wp ones? It rains a lot in Alaska.
