From Mississippi, any advice on where to start detecting? We have a county Lake, a waterway, I guess my concern is the laws for detecting.

Hi there Mississippi Welcome abroad.

What part of ole miss you from? Well lakes and waterways I ask the game warden and local law. Also check the court house to who owns the area that you want to hunt. Always get permission from land owners.

Hey thanks for the info! Well lets see, I am about half way between Ole Ms Rebels and Ms State Bulldogs! I spent my early years in Starkville...so guess that makes me closer to the Bulldogs but I usually say Roll Tide! LOL

Mona, I guess you know to stay out of federal forests and parks and federal wildlife management areas, Historic sites and also indian reservations. Those will get you in trouble in a heartbeat. I don't know how your state is but Florida has strict rules and they enforce them so you need to check with a state park ranger better yet. His supervisor.  and I would check with the Department of Transportation. A lot of the land that is near the roads belongs to DOT. For example right of ways. . I use the County Property Appraiser website to figure out who owns what. Ours has maps of every property and every owner. When I see a new site I go there first.

I just started researching places today to hunt and found this site, I had picked up couldn't do state parks so I assumed all other's were out also. I had no idea where to start but researching on here seems like open corn fields with owner permission is good. Also we have the Tenn Tom waterway, I would like to go to the lock and dams and hunt on the rocks, I would think I would have to have permission to do that also, but no sure since it is open to the public to fish, no digging would be required..just hoping someone lost jewlry while fishing LOL!
Anyway I have had my detector for a long time, been thinking of using it since 3 days a week I will have time on my hands!  Thanks for the info, much appreciated.
Mona

Monacoll...if you do a search of this forum, you'll find a couple of posts that have links that will take you to the city ordinances for a whole lot of US cities and towns.......If that doesn't pan out go to you city or county website and do a search there for metal detecting and also for park regulations.

Mona, that was an amusing bunch of ball players in the photo. Who is W. S.? They look like they lost their last five games.

Keep looking for good sites. At first you feel like you are hemed in by the ordinances but as you keep looking you will find there are lots of sites.
Don't be afraid to ask land owners. The first private land owner I asked was happy to have me come on and look. He bought the land from the family of a deceased banker that told him there was a lost box of gold coins on the property. Pat and I spent two days going over it and found about 40 cents clad and a piece of type metal with the words "Carter's Pills"
. It was fun and next time we will look at another part of the property that was a house place in the 1930's.
