Hi Guys

Hello  to all .. this is my first post on this site and thought I would make it a good one

I thought you might like to see this gold stater I found last weekend...

Quote from Chris Rudd on a similar coin

Struck by the Belgae of Hampshire, this distinctively decorated gold stater is the Ladder Mane type, so called on account of the horse's mane which is composed of a comb-like row of short lines. You'll see right away - probably with some surprise - that this horse doesn't have three tails, unlike most other horses on southern staters of this early period (c.50-30 BC). The Ladder Mane is an excessively rare type, with only five other examples recorded. Like the Cheriton Wheel and Cheesefoot Head gold staters (ABC 758, 761), the much rarer Ladder Mane gold stater is a later development of the Selsey Two-Faced gold stater (ABC 485) of the Regini and Atrebates. Although the first Ladder Mane was published twenty years ago (Num. Circ. April 1992), precious few have come to light since then."

Needless to say I am well happy !! Cool

Sure

I was out with my local group the Metal Detectives. We were searching a field just north east of Andover. A few grotty Roman and a few hammered silver had come up. I was in an areas of the feild where it looked like  a German Messerschmitt has crashed in the war as we we finding lots of aviation related aluminium (rivet holed / grey painted) there were also numerous spent 20mm cannon casings around. I had only been looking for about twenty mins when the stater came out among the debris area. I am thinking it had been missed in the past due to the high contamination, but the XP Deus is a great detector and really sniffs out good signals in contaminated ground. This is my best find so far (only gold coin so far ) and will add it to the silver hammered ones I have.

Ian

Hi Ian

Thanks for that well detailed answer. As I was reading it I could see the entire seen in my head, the thing about treasure hunting is you just never know when the good one (In your case VERY good one) will come up.   Thanks for sharing that with us.

All the best
Xavier

Wow what a cool find, they were quite elegant back then.  I wish we still made coins of precious metals.  Oh ya then we couldn't have inflation Angry

An old timer friend of mine now in his late 80’s always says.
"If your name is on it you will never miss it"
Congratulations.
Great find
