Hey Ridge Runner it must be a while since you lived in Queensland. When you say Gold Digger 1950 ain?t that far from me I guess you have simply forgotten the Perth WA is on the other side of the continent from me here in Melbourne. It?s only about 3k miles away. All kidding aside thanks for the info I will look all of them up.  Just a bit more prattle to run up my mileage.

That's a lot of stubbies. Are you talking about by car, bus, train, plain, or walking? or should I say stumbling?

My guess is - the sun had nothing to do with it.

Never been there myself. Maybe one day, but not by car - it's too far. Been to Queensland, love the weather up there.
Today, here in Melbourne it's been more like what you're probable getting in London. High-13c, Low-3,5c, the lowest May day in 5 years. So what happened to global warming? That's what I would like to know.

Yeah, I know how you feel it's about 24c here today but just before Christmas it went down to -12.9c, Three weeks ago it between
6 and 8*c in the daytime. So now we can get a bit of detecting in now, I went out over Christmas detecting and it was -8*c.
3 hours of that and I was off. Shocked

-8c, I can't even imagine what that's like. On second thoughts, I've been to the snow at Mt. Buller a couple of time. I don't know what the temperature there was, but it was under zero, by how much I have no idea. Drove up the first time, and went with a bus load of mates from work the second. Both time the temp was not an issue - spent most of the time inside consuming warming liquids, telling dirty jokes, and enjoying the eye candy.

When you go out detecting in the UK where do you go and what do you hope to fine? surly not nuggets.

Well I have found 3 bits of 18ct gold jewellery, 2 gold rings and a T bar of a pocket watch chain in one 5ft sweep of the coil,
and I find a few roman coins and I walked of a friends patio and within 18" i found a williamIII 1696 silver shilling,
There is gold in Wales and in Scotland but I've never been there yet but I will take the gold machine there and give it a whirl
sometime,

Have you ever been to the Victorian gold fields?

In 1980 when there was when the gold rush fever was at it's peek. At that time there were hundreds of shops selling metal detectors, and there were articles in the newspaper almost every day about nugget found. I think there was an element of the Lockness monster caper. By that I mean - I doubt that all the articles about nuggets found were genuine. but were make up to promote business, tourism, and detector sales. I put in a lot of time with a detector. I bought many old maps ( 19th century) from the mines department, that showed the location of old prospecting and dig sites, and one that showed where the big nuggets were found, including the ten biggest nuggets ever found in the world, and ofMcause the biggest - the welcome stranger. It is no longer the biggest, since a find in Kalgoorie, WA.  Many time I would arrive at a site as people where leaving, I would search for a few hours, and as I was leaving other people would be arriving. As I've said before the trouble most of the time was mineralized soil. My detector would be howling constantly at the surface material.
