ahh, Reno....a really interesting part of the state.   Too bad it plays second fiddle to Las Vegas.  The scenery and the history in your part of the state is great.

Assuming you are planning on using the detector primarily for coinshooting, relic hunting, and nugget hunting either the exterra 705 or the teknetics g2 should meet your needs for a long time.   Both Minelab and Teknetics have excellent reputations.  It's a little hard to do a direct comparison between the two machines since the exterra has been around for a while (garnering very solid user reviews) while the g2 is a very new machine......but everything I've read about it indicates that it's based on some very solid tried and true technology (fisher gold bug).  If my dad were asking me about a detector in that price range for those types of hunting, I'd definitely have him check those two out.   And while I had him check both the G2 and the Xterra out, I'd also have him take a look at the Tesoro Lobo Super Traq.  Tesoro makes very good, very reliable machines that have the same kind of user reviews that the Xterra enjoys.   Tesoro backs their machines with a lifetime warranty.  One thing you won't have with the Tesoro is a digital meter.  Some people find the meters really helpful, others find them mostly distracting.
