I will be receiving not only my first real metal detector but also my sons first detector tomorrow. I am very excited to learn what I can, and I am very open to suggestions from not only those who have been doing it for awhile, but also from newbies like myself that are having luck or have suggestions.
I want to make it as enjoyable for my family as possible and would appreciate any feedback that I can get! Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you all and sharing what treasures lay in wait!!

Welcome CrippledCoyote.

I'd recommend starting by reading the manual twice before you even start swinging it.   Then go out and swing and dig for a while followed by coming back in and reading the manual again.  It will make a bit more sense then.   Also spend some time reading the previous posts here on THunting.com---especially those in the "Beginners" section and in any other section that tickles your fancy.   Join any conversation that you think you can possibly contribute to and don't be afraid to start new topics with questions of your own.  If you happen to open a topic in a "wrong" section of the board, one of the moderators will move it for you.

Enjoy your time here and your new hobby.

Thank you for the welcome and the advice! I have spent most my day, reading anything I can on my machine and metal detecting. The ground is too frozen right now to do a whole lot, so I figure there is no time like the present to learn as much as possible.  Any other tips for my family and I as we begin learning more about this hobby?
I realize that with the ground being frozen there is not a huge amount that we can do, but any ideas of someplace we could go look for anything?

Again thank you for the warm welcome!

G'Day from
Australia CC
Fairly new to this lark myself, although I been messing with MD's for a few years decided to get serious this time round. I read a post on here somewhere in which somebody said that tesoro brand were popular because they dont have visual meter's which brings me to my point. Best advice is to gather loads of different coins, and types of metal, bits of wire, chain, cans anything you can get your hands on and make a test plot. What I am trying to say is bury them at different depth's and make a map of whats where, then use it to learn what items make what sounds. the sounds will change over time. Due to a number of different factors, that you needn't worry about for now. be prepared to dig crap and lots of it just when you think a square foot of ground couldnt possibly fit in another pulltab you'll find another 1000. People will look at you, like your a weirdo. because they dont understand what your doing. ignore them. You will find this to be one the most rewarding things you and your son can do together. and who knows you may even find some financial rewards along the way. Welcome to the wonderful world of metal detecting. your gonna dig it ( pun inteneded )
