Hello all!  I hunt in Nevada with my MXT.  Current interest is meteorites and possibly building my own PI unit.  Looks like some good discussion here on that subject, so I'm in.
Randy

Hi Randy1

Welcome to thunting from South Africa I'm sure that you will find all the info that you will need to build your PI. Do you have a specific design in mind?

Regards Xavier

Welcome and the MXT is a dandy, sounds like a neat idea , building your own, I wouldn't have a clue, but there's many on here that can get you going  Wise Wise Wise

Thanks Xavier.  Haven't picked out a design yet.  I really enjoyed an article from Carl Moreland (Hammerhead), and I'd like something I can experiment with, and also something that can cover lots of ground (Nevada has lots).  Being an engineer, I'm interested in the design aspects.

Yes I know what it's like to cover lots of ground with a small coil but you still have to ask your self what is it that you are going to be looking for once you know that then you can start looking at the different designs here is a simple rule of thumbs large coil large objects and lots of depth small coil small objects and little depth mind you that some can detect a coin at 400mm (or so they say) I can detect at about 300mm with the PI detector that I build. You will also have to know if you want to go for a PI or a VLF machine.

All the best Xavier

Welcome from New Mexico.

The Hammer Head is a exilent learning and development platform.

Carls is just about the same.

He supports the coils , PCB, and Parts.

Cant go wrong with it for a starter.

Let us know what you do.

I'm an electronics engineer, so I have a pretty good handle on the tradeoffs.  I barely have time to swing the MXT that I already have, so it's kinda silly for me to be starting a project like this.  But I used to build stuff back in my youth when I had lots of time, and I might get the bug again.

I'm wondering if someone has the through hole PCB for sale.  SMT isn't very friendly to experimentation...

I do love the MXT.  Old school knobs are perfect.  I used to have an XLT, and it's much nicer to be able to see and access everything at once.
