:)Hi all, thanks for all the good replies. I live in a farming area and will be looking at old homesites, streams went the water goes down, right now their about overflowing. I will be looking mostly for old coins. Got tip on old school house, walking distance from my house, long gone now, built in the 1800's. I'll keep an open mind, just bought a pinpointer. Should be fun Cheesy Detecting

Brad, I have hunted a lot of old school houses from that era and I am offering a comment here for you to remember. You will find a lot of artifacts and relics but few coins. Unlike the schools of today, there was no cafeteria and nothing really for kids to spend money on. You may find the occasional coin but they will be very few and far between. You will probably find knives, toys, pen nibs, iron rings, horseshoes, hinges and lots of nails. You'll also find lots of hand made marbles when digging for a relic. If you are good at spotting a dump site, you will also find glass bottles by the score there. Old inkwells and liniment bottles are common at school house dump sites.

I mention this because you say you are primarily interested in coins. If that is your focus, find schools that were in use from the mid 1930s and onward when the government of the day forced schools to sell or provide the kids with milk. When that happened, kids took pockets full of coins to school daily and lost them on a regular basis when they played.

I see you are in Tennessee which is in the cradle of the Civil War. Battlefields are often off limits and already hunted to death but the sharp eyed observer can find where both sides camped. Those campgrounds are very fertile, mate. Trust me on that one.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
