Go Up Go Down

Hello everyone.  I'm new to the site and have done little to no treasure hunting.  I just returned from a vacation to South Dakota and really was inspired by this trip to get a metal detector and start looking.  I've always been into horses and have recently got out of them due to the economy and I'm looking for something that is less involved and has less overhead.  I think this could just be it.  I'm very interested in history and have a passion for reading about the relics people are finding.

I would especially be interested in Ghost Towns and metal detecting.  I grew up in a town with a old rail road track that ran thorough it and I remember as a kid collecting insulators and railroad spikes all the time.  I guess the kid in me is sort of revived after this recent trip.

Eric

Hello, Eric......welcome to THunting.com.   You'll find lots of encouragement and lots of tips and tricks on how to use your detector and how to find (but not necessarilly specifically where) ghost towns and other interesting areas to search on this site.

Craig, I wish that I had some good tips for you but I'm literally starting from scratch myself.

I'm wondering if anyone could give me their opinion on what would be the best detector for my buck?  I've perused the forum on different opinions and I was wondering what would be best for doing some searching in parks, farms, abandoned areas and such.  I'm not looking to spend a lot of money until I get more serious.

Thanks in advance.

Eric

Eric,

A detector worth having costs anywhere from $200.00 and up with $5,000.00 or so being the top end. With that many worthy choices, it's a bit handier to know your budget limit, your intended use (coins, relics, beach hunting, park hunting) and your abilities (any physical imitations?). Knowing those and reporting them here will bring a flood of responses from the readers here.

From there, your preferences play a big part. Want graphics target ID? Want depth ID? Lots of options. Personally, I don't use the bells and whistles at all. I have a lot of equipment but my favorites are my Minelab and my Tesroro. Both are plain vanilla machines and I dig every target so I don't care if there's trash or junk down there by my detector's reckoning. In around 10% of the cases, the detector is wrong anyway and I would have missed a really nice find. The real workers here will tell you to dig every target no matter what your machine says. At first, it allows you to see how your machine works. Later, it proves to you that the pull tab your machine swore was down there was really a gold ring. The machines do try hard but they are really only guessing.
