Hello everyone. I'm from Central Texas and new to this forum. Several years ago I invested in a metal detector from Cabela's. It is pretty much worthless for finding anything other than junk. I'm saving my pennies in the hope of purchasing a Garrett AT Pro in the not too distant future.
I'm mainly interested in Civil War relic hunting in the areas where my Civil War ancestors fought. A good example of that would be Port Hudson, La. My Great Great Grandfather, Silas W. Fletcher was a Sgt. in the 49th Alabama Infantry along with his brother James B. Fletcher. The 49th helped to defend an area known as The Priest Cap.
I would like to do some metal detecting at Port Hudson, but I don't have any contacts in that area, and I definitely do not want to do any digging on private property without permission. I understand that The Priest Cap is on pirvate property, and that the property owner doesn't allow any digging. He has probably had people disrespect his property and finally put a stop to all digging there.

Michael

Welcome from Brazos County.  I can understand wanting to search areas with family history, but if it's just Civil War relics you're wanting to search for, Millican Tx has some history, as well as camp Cooley Ranch, The ranch has been sold at auction within the last year, I think. Unfortunately, I have no contact info to share with you at this time. All of the people in Millican my family has known have passed away.  If I can find anything for you, I'll let you know.

Best of luck,
Bill
