Signed up 1/8/11. I'll learn as I go... I,m  going back into an old hobby, and I do mean old. I started with a Fisher M Scope in the early 70's. I'm retired now and want to get back into the hobby but not sure about a new metal detector. Do I build or buy? It will be more for coins and jewelery at local areas and not so much for gold nuggets farther away. THx

Thanks.... I,m a new at this so bear with me, I'll make mistakes I'm sure! Looking for the best priced metal detector for coins and jewelry that won't break the bank, simple but good. Need a little direction as to "whats best" for what I decribed for searching local parks, open fields and streams.

Greetings from Perth, Derroll.

If you wait too long, you will not be getting started soon enough. Sounds a bit trite, but it's true. Start with what you can afford. Don't be nit picking your choice to death. An entry level machine at around $300 or so will have you out finding plenty of goodies. Keep your ear to the ground here on the forums and decide what you want to get next. In no time at all, your next machine will be without additional cost because you will have accumulated enough from your entry level machine to buy it without even attacking the family budget.

Any modern White's, Fisher, Garrett, Tesoro or Bounty hunter in the $300 price range will get you going and later become a fine backup machine for those times when one of your friends accompanies you or your main machine just needs a rest. Go on. Leap out there and have faith.

Thanks GD Theres so many detectors on the market and they all sound rewarding in finding treasures. I will have to do some homework and make a choice. I anticipated $300 to $400 price range. You sound very knowledgeable about today's detectors and all the new advances in electronics involved with them.  If there would be one key item to look for in a new detector what would it be?

This Fisher I have is a replication of a Fisher my dad bought (late 60's or early 70's) I got the Schematic from Fisher Labs when they were a small company in Sunnyvale California. The only thing I bought from them was the coil, all the rest I built and it's still going strong. I did have to change over to nicad batteries, could no longer find the old Mallory Duracell mercury battery. I have found a lot with it, coins of all types, gold rings, gold pendants, a mans gold bracelet (best find) and too much junk. A new detector will eliminate much of that "junk"  and will be a lot less digging.

Thanks for the reply, I'll do some research and ask a few questions and then make my decision and buy a new detector.

Hello Hey Derrolb, it sounds like we have a lot in common.  We have a Casita 17ft liberty Deluxe travel trailer and plan to do a lot of traveling around with it and our Detectors from now on.  We're heading to Arizona next week, and I hope to try my old Garretts out there.  Wish I still had that HEATHKIT MD I built years ago.

Good luck.

Keith

Hi Keith Sounds like fun....

The older detectors seem to be more reliable for longevity but find too much junk. For me it's time for a new one, I have enjoyed this old Detector and will continue to use it in less populated areas where theres far less "junk".

Have fun in your travels and I hope you find many treasures big and small.

Best regards  Derrol

Your choice begins with the type of detector you want. Induction balance? Pulse induction? VLF/TR? BFO?

Then it moves on to features. Ground balance? Discrimination? Coils? Target ID? Depth indicator?

As I said earlier, go for something like the Garrett Ace 250 or 350. Perhaps a Whites, MXT. Start here and try not to drool on your keyboard.

Whats your game plane? Stick with the old one or buy a new one? The Mfg of metal detectors are very imkpressive and so many to choose from. I'm in the research mode... I'll post later for help on Mfg and Model. So many too choose from.

Good luck

Derrol

Thanks again GD

Have been looking at the ace 350 and am impressed, would go for that over the 250. will look into the Whites MXT. I will certainly have questions if thats OK?
