Howdy, Brian.......first pointer -- "Never get Discouraged, especially if you don't find Black Beard's treasure your first or second time out"
second pointer -- spend some time reading what has already been posted at THunting.com. A lot of your questions will already be answered in our archives
third pointer -- get out there and hunt! nothing substitutes for swingin' a detector (or even operating a sifter at an old dump site if you don't have a detector).
fourth pointer -- if you don't have a detector, realize there is no single best detector. There are lots of excellent detectors in all price ranges. The art is deciding what you most want to do with the detector, deciding your price range, and then finding the detector that most fits YOUR needs and wishes. Then master your detector (that takes time, study, and practice). If you don't put in the time and effort the latest/greatest/most expensive detector in the world won't serve you as well as an old beat up detector will serve the person who has taken the time to learn his/her tool.
fifth pointer -- share in the fun.
Welcome aboard.
