Welcome to the hobby! You are gonna have a blast. I got my detector back just before Christmas and have been having a really really great time although my machine is one of the more inexpensive ones. Jealous of all those White's, Garret's, and people have on this board. LOL

Where about is Cali you at? I too am from California. Up half way between Redding and Sacramento. Tiny little town in the rice belt of Cali.

I live about half hour south of San Francisco used to be a fly fishing guide on the Lower Sac in Redding very familiar with the area.
