Noel,

The weakest parts of the coil are the connector itself and the place where the wire goes into the coil body. Gently move the wire near the coil body. If it seems better or changes the tone, it will be an open wire there. Sometimes you can dig the potting out and repair the wire but most often you have to replace the coil. Do the same at the connector end and see what happens. If it's at the connector end, they almost always can be disassembled to repair the wires.
