Colorado based, interested in building a sensitive magnetometer.  Want to search for meteorites. Anyone know where to get a copy of the Feb '68 Scientific American article about building a proton precession magnetometer?  Or any other schematics or plans for something similar?

Hello - Just in case nobody else knew what the heck he was talking about -( Read Below) Cause i sure didn't.

The proton magnetometer, also known as the proton precession magnetometer (PPM), uses the principle of Earth's field nuclear magnetic resonance (EFNMR) to measure very small variations in the Earth's magnetic field, allowing ferrous objects on land and at sea to be detected.

They are used in land-based archaeology to map the positions of demolished walls and buildings and at sea to locate wrecked ships for recreational diving.

The principle of operation is outlined in the magnetometer article.

Hi jccraig and welcome! The magazine article & magnetometer was discussed on a post a couple of years ago - not saying you can't get answers or insight currently, but thought you might like to give it a look-see

Hi,

If you are looking for meteorites in a desert, the best tool to cover a large area in a short time is a PPM (proton precession magnetometer). This instrument does not detect anything other than ferro-magnetic material (iron, steel, nickel) but it does it with much higher sensitivity than ANY metal detector on earth.
It will also detect rocky meteorites provided this rock has a good level of magnetite in it.
Metallic meteorites rapidly degrade in wet ground but they keep very well in desert.
The best method to cover a large ground is to pull a non-magnetic cart with a small vehicle like a quad.

You will find there a very good instrument costing much less than any commercial instrument and working as well if not better.
This PPM makes one reading per second which correspond to one reading per step for a walking operator.
It sensitivity will enable to detect any metallic meteorite on the survey track, even if it is buried one meter deep.

Willy

Welcome from New Mexico.

Get your post behind yer self and check out the down loads area.

Oh, Ya!   Your going to be lucky to find Lunch Box size Space Rocks with a Mag.

Sorry but a Magnet on a stick will out perform one on the smaller Meteorites.

Any VLF (In All Metal) or PI detector works just fine.
