Hi, I don't have a metal detector yet but have researched some local sites and have been begging Santa and my husband for a metal detector for years and years. I'd love to detect old home and town sites, look for relics and hunt the beach for jewelry. If anyone in southern CA is selling a used detector or has some advice (what detector to start with etc.) I'd appreciate your help.  Rider

Hello Gertrude. Welcome from CT. You can check Craigs list for detectors and of course eBay. Do some reading here and you will find a lot of info on detecting in general and you can research what kind of detector so suit you.  Welcome

Thanks for the advice! It appears that "do it all" detectors are very expensive. Do you have a recommendation for a beginner?

Welcome from New Mexico!   Look into something like a Used Garret ACE 250 or something.

Thanks, I've been reading the forum and other people have suggested that detector as well.

I just went from CA to TX with my dad last month. Driving cross country and seeing the deserted towns and farmhouses really gives me the detecting "itch". New Mexico has TONS of interesting places right near the road that look like perfect spots for metal detecting. I actually saved some on the gps in my phone (in case I ever get to come back with a metal detector. Yeah, go ahead and laugh....). My family thinks I'm nuts Idiot, but I love to look around old home and town sites just for fun. Have you looked around the Lordsburg/Railroad area? It looks like there are some neat places to search.  When I got home I got on google and bing and looked along the Hwy 10 from CA to TX with the satellite maps. Yeah, I'm hopeless...

HelloWelcome to Thunting.com from S.E.Ks.  Shake Hand I would suggest the Tesoro Compdora for the beginner at a cost of 160.00 new with lifetime warrenty. In the mean time sit back and  injoy reading the forum. There is only one week left on a chance to win a new pin-pointer in the lottery being held now. check it out and happy hunting to you. Waveing

Hello Gertrude......welcome from Arizona.   Go over to our beginners board and you'll find several posts that will help you recognize a good deal on a "do it all" entry level detector.   Basically, if you can get just about any Tesoro, a Garrett 250 or 350 or AT Pro (though I doubt if you'll have much luck finding the ATPro used), a Fisher F4, or a White's coinmaster you should have yourself a decent detector to start out with.   And don't ignore either Teknetics or Bounty Hunters since they are made by the same folks as make the Fisher F4.
