The laws and regulations are going to vary based on who has jurisdiction over the piece of ground you are searching. In other words each city will have its own set of rules for parks that it administers and these rules could be very different from those that apply at a park administered by the county or the state. In preparing for my trip to Colorado, I did do some research...you're in luck. For the most part, Colorado seems to be one of the most detector friendly states I've seen. Hopefully wise use and common courtesy on the part of members of our hobby will help keep it that way (as long as we don't let the environmentalist and the "preserve everything at any cost" bunch paint the wrong picture of us or shove through bad laws while we aren't looking.
As always the best place to start is your own yard, especially if you live in an older part of town. After that, I'd try to get permission to hunt some of the vacant lots in older section of town or in some of the "ghost" towns.
