Hi all

I'm a newbie from BC (previously the UK) and keen to get into Detecting. I have not chosen a weapon yet but been busy researching. Still a lot of snow on the ground so I have some time, and hopefully can pick the brains of some of the experienced hunters here?

hello BCDigger.....welcome to THunting.com.   There is a lot of information here.  I suggest you start by scanning the Beginners board for any past topics that look interesting.  If you have specific questions, try the search function at the top right of the page and search "entire function".   If that doesn't turn up an answer for you (or you think it is either inadequate or out of date) feel free to open a new topic with your question (hopefully on an appropriate board, but don't worry too much about that -- if there is  a better board for it, one of the moderators will move it for you).

So dig in, join in, and have fun.

BA in Arizona

Hi BA - thanks for the welcome and advice. I will start checking things out - can't wait to get a machine chosen and begin putting all the locality, geology and historical research I've been doing into action!

Hey thanks Homefire - I travel a lot of backwoods and mountain areas and would really like to detect some of the interesting places, maybe trying to work off old diverted beds and such. I just love exploring untried formations etc but haven't done detecting yet - kinda why I was looking at the Golden King to assess the ground deep. What do you do?

Hello from California,

Please look at at all the post about the Gold King.

I was tranquilized by their ad but it like a lot of things turned out to be a false negative.

This site has saved me 10's of thousands of dollars by pure education and advice from it's mentors and members.

There is no other site like this on the internet that I have found.

As mentioned,do a search before you post.

Ask and you shall receive.....Advice on this site is genuine.

Stay involved and you will learn.

Good luck,

JP

Hi JP

Thanks for the advice - I read all the posts I could find on it, but was still undecided. Hobbyist reviewed the machine in depth and seems overall happy with it?

Anyway, as I'm new to this I'm thinking it might be better to not add pressure into my prospecting (you know - buying something real expensive and trying to justify the equipment with finds). So I might just buy the GMT which seems to be highly recommended and go a-wandering. After all, I just want to add this extra dimension to my exploring right now.

I'm also aware of the learning curve involved in new hobbies - I took up fly-fishing several years ago and researched/ practiced and tried for a whole season before catching anything decent! Now I am good at it and catch nice fish regularly and it has become a very satisfying hobby - I think this might be similar?

Gettin what looks like another foot of snow here today - armchair detecting for a while yet!

When gold prospecting do you always use known site producers or just follow your nose?

YO welcome BC,i've got the GMT and the two MXTs you see on the left , the GMT is better on tiny gold but the mxt is better on deep or very small gold and the MXT you can use for general detecting, also the MXT will find gold the size of this * and abit smaller and in the prospecting mode you have more information and it is easier to use because of the frequency at 14/15 khz compared to the GMTs 48 Khz so just consider these thing and i'm sure you'll get the right machine, the GMT has both manual and auto ground balance and the grab button, and the MXT PRO has auto G/B with the Grab button, good luck

john
