Thanks for the welcome BA...I can't wait to get started (again) but I've been reading a lot about people using pinpointers and am wondering how they're used and why?  Doesn't a regular detector (like the Garrett that I have) do a good enough job?

Welcome from New Mexico.

I don't use a Pin Pointer, just more junk to Carrie.

Everyone should learn how to pinpoint with their detector.   Pinpointing with the 550 is not difficult, and can be done pretty precisely----especially if you practice.    However, a lot of people find it quicker to pinpoint with a separate pinpointer.   Both my wife and I have been known to go both ways when it comes to pinpointing---but most of the time we find the extra pinpointer just gets in the way.   when that happens, it is one more thing to keep track of and carry.

Life is full of choices and trade-offs.  Separate pinpointer comes down to time spent pinpointing vs weight/number of items  (or if you're impatient----large holes vs weight)

Good info...I think I will invest in practice time first, then if I 'need' more tools I'll buy one later.

Hi ctmcklowe96 and welcome to Thunting

The larger the coil the harder it becomes to pinpoint so if you don't want to dig large holes like in a park a pin-pointer can be a big help but like BA and Homefire said with a bit of practice you'll know how to pinpoint with your detector. On the other hand they are great if you want to check in a crevice or any other place hard to get to with the detector .

Regards Xavier
